About our masonry contractor crew in Santa Fe

How I got into masonry and why I work the way I do

I learned masonry from my father, mixing mortar and hauling brick on his jobs long before I could drive. I started Sterling Santa Fe Concrete & Masonry in 2013, and most of our calls come from Santa Fe homeowners, many of them in older houses in the historic districts, where the brick and stone have been standing a long time and deserve careful repair.

Keeping that older masonry sound is what we're best known for, though we also build new walls, walkways, driveways and outdoor kitchens. Years on the trowel taught me that water, the wrong mortar or a weak base ruins more masonry than age does, so I'd rather find and fix that first and do the job right once than patch the crack you can see and leave the cause behind it.

What you can count on when we take your job

  • I look at your job myself

I come out in person, look at the wall or chimney with you, and tell you straight what it needs, what it doesn't and why. You get the estimate in writing, so you can weigh it without a salesman standing over you.

  • We fix the cause, not just the crack

If bad drainage is soaking a wall, or a mortar harder than the old brick is making the brick break instead of the joint, a patch won't last. We sort out what's doing the damage first, so the repair holds up.

  • The crew you meet does the work

Your job is done by a crew I trained myself, and I'm on site while they work. It isn't handed off to a stranger after the estimate.

  • Permits and approvals come before the first brick

Before we start, I check what the office for your address asks for, whether that's the City of Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, Los Alamos County or the Historic Preservation Division, which has to approve exterior work on houses in the City's historic districts ahead of time. We file the paperwork the job needs and hold off until it's in hand, so your project doesn't stall halfway for a missing approval.

Licensed and insured for masonry work

  • New Mexico contractor license

In New Mexico, the state Construction Industries Division licenses contractors, and a license only covers the kind of work its classification names, so it's worth making sure whoever builds your wall is licensed for that work. Fully licensed and insured.

  • City of Santa Fe business license

Anyone doing business inside Santa Fe city limits needs a City business license, on top of being registered with the state. Ask any contractor you're considering about it before they start work on your house.
