Walkway construction in Santa Fe NM - a walk built on a packed base that stays level
Tired of a muddy path or a cracked, sunken walk to your door? We build concrete or paver walks on a packed base that holds.

What does it take to build a new walkway in Santa Fe?
Walkway construction in Santa Fe means building a path from poured concrete or concrete pavers on a packed gravel base, so you get a solid, level walk from the driveway or gate to your door instead of loose gravel, mud or a slab that's cracked and sunk.
Most people call us when the old path has cracked, tipped or turned into a muddy track, or when a new paver driveway needs a walk to tie it to the house. The price mostly comes down to how long and wide the walk is, whether you pick concrete or pavers, how much digging it takes to reach firm ground and whether there are steps or a slope to deal with. The schedule turns on the material, the season and the approvals your address needs, which I sort out before we dig. You'll get your own figure in a written estimate after I've seen the spot.
How we build a walkway, in concrete or pavers
First we help you choose the material, and it usually comes down to one trade-off. Concrete pours fast because nobody has to set pieces one by one, while pavers can take foot traffic as soon as they're down, so it depends on whether you want the job done quick or want to walk on it right away. I lean toward pavers for most walks to the front door, because you can use them the day we finish and a loose piece can be lifted and reset later. Then we dig out the path, pack the soil and lay a compacted gravel base, because a weak base is what sinks and cracks most walks. For concrete we form the edges and pour. For pavers we spread a layer of bedding sand, set the pavers, tamp them into the sand, sweep the joints full and tamp them a second time, so the pieces lock together and stay put. We haul off the dirt and leftover material before we go.
A new walk often runs past a planting bed or up to a gate, and we build what goes alongside it. If you want a low border or garden wall beside the path, we handle brick wall installation to match the house, and our stone masonry work covers stone steps, edging and flagstone where a walk needs it.
Building walkways and steps in Santa Fe city limits, historic districts and the county
Where your house sits decides who signs off. Inside city limits, the City of Santa Fe Land Use Department issues building permits for most construction work, and its list names driveway construction but not walkways, so whether your walk needs a permit isn't settled until we ask the city's building permits office. If you're in one of the city's historic districts, there's a historic review before any permit, which I cover in the questions below. Outside the cities of Santa Fe, Edgewood and Espanola, Santa Fe County requires a county development permit for all building and development except on Pueblo lands, and it lists grading among the work that covers. Before we start, I check what the office for your address asks for, we file the paperwork, and the work waits until the approvals are in hand.
We're based in Santa Fe and work across the city and the cities around it, and most of the walks we tear out failed for one of two reasons. There was no real base under them, or roof water ran across them every storm. We see the same thing on jobs in Eldorado at Santa Fe and Los Alamos, so I look at where the water goes before I lay out the line of the walk.

I come out myself to walk the route, measure it and tell you plainly what I'd build and why. You get a written estimate, so you see the cost for your walk before you decide anything.
Approvals first, then we dig
Once you say go, we take care of the permits and any historic review your address needs. Nothing gets dug until they're in hand.
We build it, then walk it

Questions before you build a walkway
How much does it cost to build a walkway in Santa Fe?
Installing a flagstone walkway usually runs about $30 to $37 per square foot across the US, and that's a national figure for flagstone, not our price. Concrete and pavers price differently, and the size of the walk, the digging and any steps move the cost the most. I'll give you a written figure for your walk once I've seen it.
What is the best material for a walkway, pavers or poured concrete?
For most walks I'd pick pavers, because on top of being ready to use right away, the joints between them help reduce the cracking you usually see in poured concrete. Concrete still makes sense when you want it poured quickly and a plain, smooth slab suits the house.
Can you build a walkway in the winter in Santa Fe?
Usually, as long as the ground isn't frozen, because paver guidance says the base goes in only when the base material and the soil under it are both unfrozen. So we plan the digging and base work for a stretch of thawed ground. The same guidance notes the base may need to be thicker depending on the site, freezing temperatures and how much traffic the walk gets.
What do I need to build a walkway in a Santa Fe historic district?
You need approval from the city's Historic Preservation Division first, because in Santa Fe's five historic districts anyone who wants to alter or build starts with a request to that office. Its approval comes before any construction permit, and staff can sign off on many requests themselves. We handle that filing as part of the job, and you can read more on the city's historic preservation page.
How do I clear snow off a paver walkway without damaging it?
Shovel it the same way you would any other pavement, since snow comes off pavers just as it does off concrete. Pavers can also hold up to deicing salt better than conventional paving, so salt on an icy morning won't treat them the way it can treat a slab.
Are permeable pavers a good choice for a walkway?
They can be, and paver industry guidance recommends permeable interlocking pavers for home walks, patios and driveways. They're set with wider joints filled with small stone so rain soaks down into the base instead of running off, which helps where a walk sits in the path of roof or yard water. I'll tell you on site whether your walk is a good spot for them.
Why Santa Fe homeowners call Sterling Santa Fe Concrete & Masonry for a new walk
I measure it and stay on site
I come out myself to look at the job and write the estimate, and I'm on site with my crew while we build it. The person who told you how the base would go in is the one watching it get packed.
A mason's trade, since 2013
I learned masonry from my father, hauling brick on his jobs long before I could drive, and started this business in 2013. That's 13 years of tearing out failed walks and seeing what was wrong underneath.
Fully licensed and insured, every job
We're fully licensed and insured. If something goes wrong on your property while we work, you're not the one left sorting it out.
Dirt stays out of the street
Construction sites in the City of Santa Fe have to follow the city's stormwater practices, so we keep the dug soil and base gravel contained and swept up. Your gutter and your neighbor's drive stay clean while the walk goes in.
On a walk, the base you never see decides how long it stays flat, and that's where I spend the most care. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job, so tell us about your walk or call (505) 303-0434 and I'll come out and look.
Work that often goes with a new walk
Brick wall installation
A low brick wall along your path can hold back a planting bed, mark the property line and give the walk a finished edge that matches the house.
Stone masonry
Stone steps, flagstone landings or a stone border can carry a walk up a slope or tie it into an older stone house without looking pieced together.
Plan your new walk, steps and edging
Call (505) 303-0434 or use the form with the walk's rough size, the material you lean toward and whether the house sits in city limits, a historic district or the county, so I know which approvals to check before I come out.
